Hugely popular in Asia and Europe, table tennis making inroads here too

Zhang Mo won the women's singles title at the Canada Cup Final Sunday at the Richmond Curling Club.

Jul 07 2005

Table tennis is big, and getting bigger. How big? Consider that 532 million people watched the world table tennis championships live from Shanghai, China recently. Given the world's population is about 6.4 billion, that's nearly one in every 10 persons on earth. Quite a testament to the popularity of this game, which has a huge following in both Asia and Europe.

The Canada Cup final at the Richmond Curling Club last weekend didn't come close to matching those numbers of course, but further showed the rapidly increasing interest in the game here.

There was seldom a parking spot to be had at the curling club on either Saturday or Sunday. Inside, fans regularly jockeyed for seating-typically staking their claim up to an hour before a match to ensure themselves a decent view of action.

Speaking of action, the players served up plenty of it. From eventual men's singles champion Feng Zhe to local up-and-comers like women's singles champion Zhang Mo, the level of competition provided a constant reminder of just how much parity there is in this sport.

Unlike many games, you can seldom predict who will win because there are simply so many variables. This is both good and bad. On one hand there is always the element of surprise, something fans are always saying they want. But on the other hand the absence of a continually dominant player leaves table tennis without a figure head a la Michael Jordan in basketball or Tiger Woods in golf.

One certainty is that if you haven't seen high level table tennis live then you're in for a surprise-and a treat. The game is as fast-paced as any of the high-profile sports in North America and the continuous action is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, or toes. There should also be no question if these players are athletes. Without being in good shape and having an ability to think quick enough to adapt to the constant changes they'd never be able to compete.

Take Feng Zhe, for example. His quick feet and fast thinking is matched only by his strong backhand and forehand techniques.

Many of the top players such as Zhe begin playing the game at an early age. In Zhe's case he was seven, and at 16 was recruited by the Chinese national team which he helped to a second-place finish in mixed doubles play at the 1991 words. Zhe is now living in Germany where he's playing for a club team.

There's more quality table tennis coming to Richmond this summer, with the curling club again being the venue. The national senior finals are set for July 22-24, the Canada Cup qualifier (for next year) is July 25, the national junior finals are July 26-28, and the world junior circuit stops by for the Canadian Junior Open Aug. 2-5.

Do yourself a favour and drop in. You may be surprised by what you've been missing.
