Hi Marco

Nice to see you back in the forum.  I remember you talking about a book that helped you with the mental aspect of your tennis game.  Would you please remond me of the name of the book.  Did you find it useful for TT.

 Merry Christmas

Great match between Georgeo Braithwaite and John Schneider.  Check out the point at 25:39, that was some point!  How does George move like this at the age of 72?  Unbelievable.

the book you are thinking of was probably "The Inner Game of Tennis" but I have found something much better now.  I recommend "With Winning In Mind" it is much more clear and concise than "the inner game" which was by comparison very obtuse and obscure.

I had also spoken of Brad Gilbert's book on Tennis called "Winning Ugly" which I still recommend.

"With Winning in Mind" really has some good info in it, specifically in how to play your best under pressure.  This is something that I really needed.  I started seeing results in 24 hours, literally.  I received the book the day before a tournament and on the next day I played great.  I played very well in Vegas too.  More importantly, the book has some great ideas on how to reach the next level.  I took notes on myself throughout Vegas.  I realized that I need to be able to return fast serves to my backhand better.  I also realized that I need better drop shots and flips on my backhand side (my forehand side is fine).  I have purchased a tournament table and a robot (got the paddle palace 988 one), and as soon as it arrives I'll be doing some extra drills.  I'll also be working on some new backhand serves, the same ones that bothered me a lot.  I'll be doing all of this systematically, as described in the book.  We'll see how the results go.

I'm also getting rid of the Bryce FX and replacing it with Nittaku Hammond Pro Alpha.  I picked up 1 sheet in Vegas, and have been doing some serves with it at my home and already I can tell that it has more tackiness in the topsheet, though the sponge is actually more firm.  It seems promising so far.  I'm looking to keep the same speed as the Bryce FX but add a bit more spin so I can control the slow loops and touch shots better.  I've also grown tired of spending $90 every 2 months.  At $28 a sheet I'm hoping this Hammond Pro Alpha will work out.  I'll have some reviews later on.

Here's a link to the book:

That is sad to hear. I imagine that is why he has not posted here in a long time, he used to post here a lot. Any information on how he passed away? Any illness, he did not seem that old. You say he "ended his life". Unfortunate tragedy to his family and to all TT.

Obituary - John Schneider

Posted by Sean on June 24th, 2006

John SchneiderI read on the about.com - table tennis/ping-pong forum this tragic news today.

Dear Table Tennis FriendsIt is my sad duty to inform you that our friend John Schneider has passed away. Last Sunday, Father’s Day, John ended his life.

Diego Schaaf
Westside Table Tennis Club

Such a tragic loss for our American Table Tennis Community. John was known to his admirers as “the answer man” at about.com’s table tennis forum. If there was a table tennis question or statistic he could find the answer and you were sure it was right.

John was a tremendous help to me as an Olympic researcher in Athens. He provided key factoids on the players that were used daily by Don Chevier and Bill Clement. When I wasn’t sure of a stat I emailed him privately and he came back with 2-3 sources for the information being fact or fiction.

John was also an equipment tester for www.ping-pong.com/ttpioneers. He knew every pip inside and out and we loved being associated with such a knowledgable and solid player.

The last time I saw John was in Las Vegas where one of my students, Justen Yao played him in one of the rating events. The consumate sportsman, John never gave an inch and battled with all his brains and brawn.

This year table tennis has lost: Grady Gordon, Bob Viducich, and now John Schneider.

I think Schneider's passing will be a great loss to the forum as well as all the other forums in which he was a regular contributor.

John has always been the ultimate facts man and a tremendous asset and resource to all who use this forum. There was no doubting his dedication and love for the game.

I will miss him greatly.

Rest in Peace John Schneider.

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
He helped a lotta people,
But it seems that good John gone,
I just looked around,
And he's gone,

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend Misha,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
He posted a lotta information,
But it seems likenow he's gone,
I just checked the forum,
And he's gone,

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend Chunglau,
Since the worlds in Paris seems he's gone,
He translateda lot for the people,
But now the websites gone,
I just browsed the website,
And he's gone,

With apologies to Harry Belafonte, I dedicate this song to world class posters (seemingly moved on to a higher forum) Ironmike (Misha), Chunglau and John Schneider.

John was...the very first person at the Westside club to introduce himself to me, 4 years ago.  He had me pegged as "Drivepen" almost instantly... afterall, how many lefthanded, 6'3", white, penholders are there?  I asked who he was, and he said "Some have called me "The answer man", and my reply was "Oh, you must be John."  John always was a bit cryptic with me, that's what I'll miss the most, trying to figure out what angle he was coming from.  Goodbye, John.

I've only met him briefly in person at Las Vegas. I played against him once in a doubles final at the US Nationals. He inspected my paddle before the match. A little while after the match he pointed out to me that my rubber at that time was not listed on the USATT approved list. I had no idea since it had the ittf logo and apparently neither did the high ranking official, who also inspected my paddle. I got the impression that he had that list completely memorized. John was very classy to let it go and not mention it until well after the match. He wasn't lodging any complaint, he just wanted me to be informed.

At first I was in shock, when Adam told me. Then I called Jason and I couldn't utter a word -- he got impatient with me because he didn't know and I was saying was "um, um." Then I started sobbing uncontrollably and had to tell him three times before he got the message.

There was this great point between John and me in Santa Monica. We've played a few times before, and he always just kills me. There was this spectacular point in the third game -- I remember it was his match point -- and I was smashing and he was lobbing. Then he hit this one back with a crazy amount of sidespin to my forehand and I could see that it was going to bounce pretty close to the net. It was going counter-clockwise to my forehand (I'm right handed). Anyone who knows me knows I HATE sidespin, and this was a really awkward shot. I hit and missed terribly, and he won that match.

He was always so funny. He came to Posse a lot, usually won if Koffee wasn't there. Always had something humorous to say. I would throw the ball to him and he'd open his mouth and pretend to catch the ball in his mouth while he caught the ball with his hand which would be around his stomach.

To a dedicated man. Maybe not close to many but loved by all. The Posse misses you dearly.

I first met John in 1986 at the old Burbank Table Tennis Club. He was one of the core members at the time, along with Arnold Lloyd, Bernard Savitz (later) and a dozen others, and he also played at Rich's (Livingston)Workshop, and the N. Hollywood TTC.

I never beat him in a match. I'm not even sure if I ever took a game off of him. He had a deceptive style using the Seemiller grip; an off the bounce hard push working the angles; a fine down the line topspin/sidespin loop, and has been viewed in a video, a good lob defense.

He was also quite a jokester and wisecracker. If you bobbled the ball prior to serving, he'd always ask: "was that a serve?" He had a joke published in a Table Tennis Topics magazine back in the 80s - something like: "When is a He a she? When it's He Zhili" (a chinese woman player).

I corresponded with him a few months back via email as he saw a few of my posts in this forum.

The U.S. table tennis world is lesser with his passing.

I have not posted on this form for many moons, but I knew John for many years

My recollection is that he went to school in Northern California, maybe Berkeley, and that he was an optometrist. I do not believe he practiced recently

He was a Seemiller style blocker with pips on one side, which he never really used . He basically blocked, but also had a sidespin loop. I first played him in the early 80s and played him 100s of times both at clubs and tournaments

He had a great sense of humor and loved playing doubles. He also played TT nearly every day at various places. He really knew equipment and brought a cooler containing Gatorade and bananas. He also would bring a notebook with pages from various internet sites

He tried really hard, but was a good sportsman

I am really shocked by his passing
