I'll download this. People have said that Peter
has some of the best serves in the country. Misha
has some great ones too.
I was watching Misha vs Tuan Le, and I noticed several
times Misha got 2 easy points on his serve back to back.
He does one that looks like top spin and Tuan hits it into
the net. The next serve looks like underspin and
Tuan pushes it off the table.
For Peter, watch the very first point of his match with
Nan Li. It's an ace.

Tru,
I finally had the Nittakus to use Megaupload. It acted
more like MegaUpSlow. I have Comcast and it took for
ever. Now I can't find the file. I have
downloaded files that size or larger with no problems.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Quick Ken

great video Rob.
It seems that most of Peter's serves are some type of
either sidespin or topspin. He serves a lot like
Samsonov, though most are deep. He protects his
backhand and wants you to return slow into his forehand
area. He seems pretty good with that forehand, but
his backhand is not very good.
Misha, on the other hand, uses a lot more underspin.
I see now that when he does an underspin serve, after
contact is complete he twists his wrist up to make it look
like maybe he was putting topspin or side spin.
That's why some of the opponent's misjudge the underspin.
And then he follows this with a serve that looks like
underspin, but it is really cork-screw spin. So then
if you push he'll get the pop up. It seems Misha
doesn't have tons of spin on his serves, but he has some
good "trickery" going on, and decent placement.
Misha also seems to have a more all-around game, though I
noticed he said the "F" word twice I think,
probably not the best mental toughness.

What I like about Peter's serve is he adds either
none or 1 extraneous
deception motions while Misha might add 2 or 3
extra.
I've noticed when I add more than 1 extra deception
motion it often interferes with my return if the serve
comes back. I've been working more on relaxed
serves like Peter uses rather than some more complicated
motions that Misha introduces.
I also like Peter's easy slow loop return of some of
Misha's serves. I think that is the most
consistent way to return the ball and Peter puts himself
in a good neutral position for the next shot as well. He
is prepared to defend or attack.

FYI. I believe Bill Walk was the assistant umpire in
that match, not the scorekeeper.

I think you have coined a good phrase:
"extraneous deception motion." Excellant.
I agree that Peter has a good slow and deep open-up
that is reminiscent of the same shot that Lupy often
uses.
I'm tempted to start trying to copy some of these
serves but I think I would do better to just get a
normal low and spinny serve. Extraneous Deception
Motions won't really be necessary to reach 2100.

Thanks for identifying
Bill as the assistant umpire. I appreciate the
help.
If anyone knows who some of the other umpires are,
please let me know. Is there some place with the
umpires pictures that I can try to match some of the
faces up with.
I've been planning on postings some pictures on the
forum asking who they are.

I was asking myself why the umpires insist on the
players wearing numbers but they don't have numbers
themselves.
Do you think it's because they are trying to keep a
low profile in the match and direct the attention toward
the players?

I also noticed that prisoners wear numbers, not

Is there such a thing as an Assistant Scorekeeper?
Maybe they would flip the little game numbers instead
of the large point number; or perhaps if the points were
too heavy they could work together to flip the thing.

I'd like to thank the Concord Table Tennis Club for
starting me on this project. It was the Golden
State Open Tournament Handbook that encouraged me
to provide something similar for the 96 Arizona Open.
I used a video camera to capture people's pictures that
went along with a player profile for our handbook.
From there the idea expanded to the internet.
I find tournaments more interesting when I know who
the people are and know a little about them. I
find these videos are a useful vehicle to teach me as
well as others a little about ourselves.
Congratulations on winning the Event!

the guy in the black had some good serves, very inconsistant tho,
lots of fault serves going into the net :(
the guy in the blue tho... the were nothing special.
These guys are about 2400 right ?
they certinally muck up a lot of serves for that level..
then again, the guy in the black is really trying hard with his fake
motions as well...

Suprisingly they made a lot of mistakes, maybe its a US thing.
A tradeoff of having lots of forehand power for less consistancy
doesn't seem all that good to me. Their serves are good, but the guy
faulting so many serves would have probably won more points just
going for something less risky.
