Donald Hayes of Windham, NH has captured the Dig Dug world Title with a score of 4,388,520 points, eclipsing the four-year-old mark of 4,211,920 points set by Canada's Dwayne Richard in 1999. Hayes becomes the first player in classic gaming history to match Billy Mitchell's feat of holding five major titles simultaneously. Mitchell was recognized in the Guinness book back in 1983 as the world record holder on Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede, Burgertime and Donkey Kong. Donald Hayes has now pulled down five big ones, too: Tron, Centipede, Dig Dug, Domino Man and Super Zaxxon.

"No one in today's fast growing 'classic gaming' field can keep up with Hayes' domination of the hobby," says Walter Day, chief editor of the forthcoming Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records. "Centipede, Tron and Dig Dug, in particular," adds Day, "were stellar games, with worldwide followings. Donald's scores are the highest we've seen in twenty years of monitoring records." Hayes will be recognized by Twin Galaxies in a special ceremony later this year and be awarded Commemorative Notice in the upcoming record book. To see the astonishing range of playing skills required to beat this game, an indepth analysis of the accompl;ishment has been prepared by Twin Galaxies Chief Referee, Robert Mruczek, who reviews each milestone reached by Hayes during his record game. Interesting, those were a lot of my favorite games from my childhood. Even though the graphics are obviously better, today's games just don't seem to have the unique playing feel and rythem offered by each of those old games.

I never got into playing for days, but I could play for hours on all of them listed pretty much on one quarter. PacMan was just a matter of learning the patterns. One good book and you've got it mastered. I could play indefinately defender (my fav), galaga, the listed dig dug, robitron, and many others on a quarter. Centipede I could only play an hour or two. I believe I maxed at 800,000 on that one. But I didn't clear out all the mushrooms either. I just played it straight up. Many more than I can name. Know what it all adds up to?

Evidence of a mis-spent childhood.

Does he plan to follow up his gaming world titles with a table tennis world title? Try to get an ITTF rating of over 4-million?

Galaga. Now there's a cool game. Spent *way, way* too much time on that one.
More spin less talk.

I visited Don's basement last month with Andre. He has several arcade games there and I watched him play Ms Pacman, Joust, and Centipede. The man has mad skills! He went through many boards of Ms. Pac Man with running commentary where the monsters would turn before they turned. Then he says that this isn't his game!! He claims he's only 2550 at Ms. Pac Man. The next game he demonstrated for me was Joust. After many screens I ask him to play Centipede and he said something like "Let's wait until I get through wave 62 since it's more challenging than the others with the multiple pterodactyls."

When he got to Centipede he said he's 2800 at the game. He wasn't kidding. World class! I jumped on the game after about 70 screens and within a minute he evaluated my game and said that I had good centipede instincts. He estimated that my high score (from when I played 20 years ago) would've been around 300,000 because it is at that point where things would happen that I wouldn't be able to cope with. I don't rcall my high score but I think he came darn close.

Hilarious.

I just caught myself being condescending towards these "skills" but then I realized that this is exactly how most members of my family think about my TT skills.

The next step in silliness would be to pay Don for Centipede lessons. I would defend myself with "but he's a world class player!"

That's pretty impressive.  I wonder if he played Dino-wars.  I beat that game.  Awesome game.

I'm pretty good at Mrs. Pac Man too.  I had a freind who used to play in the world pinball championships.

It really is sad when ignorant outsiders fail to recognize true athletic talent.  Don't they realize theself sacrifice and singular focus it takes to be a champion?
