Rob,

I wouldn't have fared well against her.  I suspect serious concentration problems...

This is a real player, I was warming up next to her table several times during the tournament. I hear she played in the Under 1300's and had about 40 spectators watching her match...it wasn't for her table tennis talent it seems.

Roger, from Newgy got her name.  He said she's a model living in California.

Perhaps he has her number.

I wouldn't use this as proof since she didn't request the photo.

I would use the other 30 exuberant and energetic "chicks" that requested to pose with me for a picture along with the hundreds of others that expressed their enthusiasm with the uniform.

p.s. Thanks for highlighting "cho" in Nacho.  I must have missed it's mention at the tournament.

"I suspect serious concentration problems"

It doesn't happen often in tournaments, but here's my advice for playing a physically attractive opponent. The key is to convince yourself that she will be impressed if you beat her. Assume she gets turned on by good play. Whenever you get distracted by her looks, repeat to yourself "I want to impress her, I want to impress her"

Thanks for the tip!  I will file it away - just in case.

Now what do I do to beat these unwholesomely (compared to me) talented kids?

High, deep loop to their backhand side.  Be prepared to block to opposite corner if they have the speed to step around it.

Good tip - and I'll work on it.

I'm in a "loop rebuilding" phase right now, so that shot isn't currently in my arsenal.   I used to have a decent high loop, so should be able to get it back soon - I hope...

Let's put this in a more general context. One first learns to loop then it takes some time to learn to move and loop. I find most kids on the rise are in that state of transition. If they only need to take a small step to loop, they don't miss. If I make them take a big step or two steps to loop, they miss.

Doh!

That is pretty much what Shirley Ho did beating me - sounds like you gave her some tips BEFORE the tournament.  I feel betrayed : (

Shirley didn't loop much, but has really sound forehand and backhand strokes.  She also has annoyingly precise ball control, i.e. when she went cross court, she went "very cross court" and when she went down the line, she generally kept the ball within a couple inches of the line most of the time.  She also hit most ball fairly deep, which makes my close to the table attack and counter game a bit tougher.

Ethan looped more, and this probably would have been sound technique against him.  He has some pretty nasty serves, and isn't shy about abusing weak returns.  I think moving him around more would have been an excellent tactic, but not one I'm currently capable of pulling off.

My "to do" list after the tournament is long.  Here's a peek:
#1 unfortunately involves improving mu pushes.  I need more consistency and need to learn to vary the location and spins better.  I also need to learn to push a bit less and flip or loop more.  I lost way too many points on missed or weak pushes.

#2 is general movement - including losing weight, improving footwork, and getting my feet in the right place.  I especially need to get better at getting set after serving.  I lost too many points on decent, but not really good returns that I just wasn't ready for...

#3 is improving serves and serve returns.  Ethan Chua had a couple serves that tore me up.  Several others (Cole and Mike are two...) have ones that I feel handcuffed me unnecessarily.  I need to get better at serve deception too.

#4 is getting my new and improved backhand into action comfortably.   I have a habit of getting locked into either a blocking or pushing mode and missing attack possibilities.  I need to build enough confidence to stroke the ball freely (and hopefully correctly) under match pressure.

#5 is working on better placement and consistency on my "regular" forehand and backhand strokes.  Shirley really illustrated how much this matters.

#6 is that dang loop.  I think it is, and the moment, less critical to success than the above, but, should I get them sorted out, it will become more important.

There are too many other details to mention, but those are highlights.  Dang, I got some work to do!

Marco,

Are you sure there isn't a rule against that?

In any case, all the kids who have beaten me - and even the few who lost to me - were WAY to cute to even think about kicking.  I whine about losing to them, but, in reality, have nothing but respect.  They work hard to get as good as they are, and such dedication in kids is pretty impressive.

I can only imagine what a brat I'd have been had I been a competitive TT player at 8, 9, or 10 years old...

She used to play as a child in the Ukraine.  Now she plays at our club in Las Vegas.  I have been coaching her and some of the other members are also helping her improve her game.  She will have a rating after the Nationals.  She has only been playing for about 2 months, impressive.

She is a professional model so if any vendor is interested in using her for advertising, email me and I will contact her.

By the way I took that picture of her with the nacho man's camera.

Jeez Robert this is fairly shameless.  A 1300 player who is over 20 years old and you want to sponsor her?  You expect her to improve significantly before she hits 30?  To what, maybe 1800?

Why don't you sponsor some up and coming juniors.

Nevermind.
