This is a real player, I was warming up next to her table several times during the tournament. I hear she played in the Under 1300's and had about 40 spectators watching her match...it wasn't for her table tennis talent it seems.

I wouldn't use this as proof since she didn't request the photo.

I would use the other 30 exuberant and energetic "chicks" that requested to pose with me for a picture along with the hundreds of others that expressed their enthusiasm with the uniform.

"I suspect serious concentration problems"

It doesn't happen often in tournaments, but here's my advice for playing a physically attractive opponent. The key is to convince yourself that she will be impressed if you beat her. Assume she gets turned on by good play. Whenever you get distracted by her looks, repeat to yourself "I want to impress her, I want to impress her"

High, deep loop to their backhand side.  Be prepared to block to opposite corner if they have the speed to step around it.

Good tip - and I'll work on it.

I'm in a "loop rebuilding" phase right now, so that shot isn't currently in my arsenal.   I used to have a decent high loop, so should be able to get it back soon - I hope...

Let's put this in a more general context. One first learns to loop then it takes some time to learn to move and loop. I find most kids on the rise are in that state of transition. If they only need to take a small step to loop, they don't miss. If I make them take a big step or two steps to loop, they miss.

Doh!

That is pretty much what Shirley Ho did beating me - sounds like you gave her some tips BEFORE the tournament.  I feel betrayed : (

Shirley didn't loop much, but has really sound forehand and backhand strokes.  She also has annoyingly precise ball control, i.e. when she went cross court, she went "very cross court" and when she went down the line, she generally kept the ball within a couple inches of the line most of the time.  She also hit most ball fairly deep, which makes my close to the table attack and counter game a bit tougher.

Ethan looped more, and this probably would have been sound technique against him.  He has some pretty nasty serves, and isn't shy about abusing weak returns.  I think moving him around more would have been an excellent tactic, but not one I'm currently capable of pulling off.

My "to do" list after the tournament is long.  Here's a peek:
#1 unfortunately involves improving mu pushes.  I need more consistency and need to learn to vary the location and spins better.  I also need to learn to push a bit less and flip or loop more.  I lost way too many points on missed or weak pushes.

#2 is general movement - including losing weight, improving footwork, and getting my feet in the right place.  I especially need to get better at getting set after serving.  I lost too many points on decent, but not really good returns that I just wasn't ready for...

#3 is improving serves and serve returns.  Ethan Chua had a couple serves that tore me up.  Several others (Cole and Mike are two...) have ones that I feel handcuffed me unnecessarily.  I need to get better at serve deception too.

#4 is getting my new and improved backhand into action comfortably.   I have a habit of getting locked into either a blocking or pushing mode and missing attack possibilities.  I need to build enough confidence to stroke the ball freely (and hopefully correctly) under match pressure.

#5 is working on better placement and consistency on my "regular" forehand and backhand strokes.  Shirley really illustrated how much this matters.

#6 is that dang loop.  I think it is, and the moment, less critical to success than the above, but, should I get them sorted out, it will become more important.

There are too many other details to mention, but those are highlights.  Dang, I got some work to do!

Marco,

Are you sure there isn't a rule against that?

In any case, all the kids who have beaten me - and even the few who lost to me - were WAY to cute to even think about kicking.  I whine about losing to them, but, in reality, have nothing but respect.  They work hard to get as good as they are, and such dedication in kids is pretty impressive.

I can only imagine what a brat I'd have been had I been a competitive TT player at 8, 9, or 10 years old...

She is a professional model so if any vendor is interested in using her for advertising, email me and I will contact her.

By the way I took that picture of her with the nacho man's camera.

Marco,

I hope you are kidding, right?  Do you want the image of table tennis to be forever geeky old men?  She's an extremely attractive, young model who happens to enjoy table tennis enough to play at the Nationals.  And if her rating is 1200-1300 for playin' 2 months of t.t., that is pretty darn good.

Robert,

Killerspin on t.v. is what motivated me to join the USATT and play tournaments so a BIG THANKS to you and the Killerspin team.  BTW, SIGN HER :) !!!

Marco,

I doubt he's planning to groove her for competition.   I'm guessing that she'd make the (already fairly attractive) Killerspin womens clothing look even better.  Just a wild guess...

Perhaps he is looking for a representative in the "attractive but not exceptionally good" category.  Biba is holding down the "attractive but pretty darn good" category admirably.

If he can figure out how to make TT popular with the "hot babe" category, we'd all (or mostly all) benefit.

bes
p.s. Robert - I want to be at the head of the line when you look for a representative from the "unattractive but not exceptionally good (male)" category.  I can make even your sleekest shirts look frumpy!

Marco,

We do sponsor some juniors and will be sponsoring more.  That is different than sponsoring adult women.

I am not interested in sponsoring porno stars.  I do not even know if we are interested in sponsoring her because we do not know anything about her yet except that she is attractive and a model.

We need to attract people from outside the sport into the sport.  If we can get women in their teens, 20's and 30's to start playing Table Tennis then the sport will grow in popularity.  The same is true for recreational players who do not want to compete in the Nationals.  We have to expand the base of players and those who are interested in the sport.

On your #1:  I could be wrong of course, but I do not think you should be concentrating on pushing less.  You should be concentrating on pushing better in terms of both placement and variation.  For example, a deep push into the elbow is very effective, especially if you can vary the spin on it.

Ilya,

You are correct - I probably rolled too many things into that #1 item.  By "pushing less" I was specifically thinking about two scenarios.

1) Opponent makes a weak, either long or a bit high push and I make some embarrasingly ugly garage play even weaker push back.  Pushing a soft, deep, flat, and moderately high ball effectively is probably impossible - definitely so for me.  What I want to do is to smoothly move into position (like the good players) and either hit or loop with authority - or at least drive the ball to a nasty place.  I hate snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory, but that seems to be my style...

2) Opponent makes a decent, but not great long push and I start to move and prepare for a loop, then "chicken out" at the last instant and end up making an exceptionally spastic attempt at a push instead.

When I need to push, or, shall we say choose to push, I absolutely need to get better at consistency, placement, and variation.

Thanks for the tip!

You sure didn't post with integrity when you implied that it would be "shameless" to sponsor Mila.Thankfully creative thinkers like Robert Blackwell are aware of the positive publicity that can be generated by attractive ladies who promote our sport. This is the real world not some moral fantasyland that you think you live in.I suppose you think Anna Kournakova was bad for tennis and it offended you when you had to look at her picture.

One thing is for sure. That Robert Blackwell doesn't need your guidance on who Killerspin sponsors.Robert Blackwell has done more for promoting US Table Tennis than anyone. As I have stated before I respectfully wish he was President of the USATT.Robert is a think and a doer and he has my support for sure.

"You sure didn't post with integrity when you implied that it would be "shameless" to sponsor Mila."

I disagree.  Maybe you need to take a moment and look up the meaning of integrity.

"I suppose you think Anna Kournakova was bad for tennis.."

As a matter of fact, that's correct.  She was a slut who was dating several hockey players, had a tatoo on her backside, behaved like Paris Hilton on a Friday night, etc.  She never won a major yet she made more money than any of the other players, and perhaps that's what I hated most about her.  If her compensation would have been consistent with her ability, then I wouldn't have minded her antics so much.

Did she attract more viewers?  Sure she did.  But not the kind of viewers that I would want.

I'm not thrilled about Sharapova's compensation & media-attention either, but at least she has some talent.

Thank god for Federer & Nadal.  THEY are the ones who have truly elevated Tennis in the last 3 years.  And they didn't have to act like skanks to do it.  Does that make sense to you?

There was an interesting article in Tennis Magazine some months back about Lindsey Davenport down to earth look at women's tennis versus the media attractors that seem to be out there now and I think it was an interesting view point about women's tennis.

I can see both sides...but it is interesting to see the Lindsey Davenports of the world versus the spectacle tennis player. We are talking about a girl that won a major (French Open I think) only to fly back to her highschool prom to attend it!

Lindsey lets her game do the talking.  So does Hennin-Hardenne (though she was a disgrace when she quit in the final of the Australian last year.  Small glitch compared to a lifetime of hard work and respectable achievement).  There's lots of hard-working players in the game who deserve the attention.

We don't have to focus on the Dennis Rodman's of our sport.  Or the Huntuchova's.  Huntuchova comes out in full make-up and skimpy outfits.  She poses before each point.  She loses, takes some pictures, then goes clubbing.  Is this what TT needs?  I don't think so.

Promoters should make decisions based on integrity and honor at all times.  Push up the hard workers of our sport.  Robert should sponsor Samson Dubina.  Show the public a squeaky clean hard working good old fashioned American Apple Pie product.  In this world of lies, drugs, scams- people hunger for something wholesome.

Rodman was definitely an odd character, but he didn't lead the NBA in rebounds for many seasons in a row by standing around and looking pretty.  He was far from the biggest guy out there too - hard work, desire, great hands, power, and instinct were his trademark.

I liked him better before he got "way weird", but respected his game even after he went over the edge.

While Kournikova never won a major tournament in singles she won several Grand Slams in doubles.  In singles, she was in the top ten in the world for a good part of her career.  I do not think it is fair to say that she was  bad player.  While he income depending on her looks as much as on her game, if she was not a very good tennis player she would have never made it to where she is on her looks alone.

There are a lot of pretty girls out there.  How many of them have also been in the top ten in the world?

While Anna K. was a pro, and that is certainly worthy of respect, especially since whe was in the top 20 or top 10; still the AMOUNT of attention & money she got was clearly not due to her Tennis ability at all.  It was due primarily because of her looks and secondarily due to the rumors surrounding her.  She was the "bad girl" of tennis, etc. etc.  She got twice as much attention as the #1 player in the world.  This, IMO, was bad for the image of the sport.

Think of Golf.  Can you imagine if there would be a girl on the golf course with her tush hanging out of a skimpy outfit, who can barely make par?  Someone who's sex life is on display for all the world to see, like a Paris Hilton?  Would that be good for golf?  I don't think so.  I was taught to respect the Dojo & I guess I bring that to the table (or at least try to).

I would like to see TT marketed like US Gymnastics is or Figure Skating, or even Martial Arts.  You don't see chicks in skimpy outfits in Karate contests do you?

I know you guys like exposure, but we have to make sure that we shoot for INTEGRITY first, and exposure second.

Marco,

One of the most important tools of effective marketing is using visually attractive images, whether it's a person, landscape, label, etc.  Look at TV commercials (most actors are very attractive) or fashion shows (models are very pretty, though some say too skinny).  Additionally, you don't always need to be an expert in a particular domain to be a great "ambasasador" for it.

I believe if Mila is presented testfully (which I don't daubt Killerspin would do, if they strike a deal) she could make a meaningful contribution to increasing the popularity of table tennis in the US.

During practice she is in position and executes her forehand at the 2200 to 2400 level.  The forehand drive is a natural stroke for her so once her footwork is established she will have a awesome forehand.   She moves with natural ease too, so it won't be long.  She had perfect eyesight, excellent hand/eye coordination and she is as fast as a cat.  She also has intuitive ball sense which is very difficult to teach players and some never figure it out.  I believe if she worked hard she could be 2300 in several years.Under Killerspin supervision maybe less time than that.

"She was a slut who was dating several hockey players, had a tatoo on her backside, behaved like Paris Hilton on a Friday night, etc.  "

Clearly spoken from personal experience and from the quality time you two spent together? Basing your opinions on tabloid fodder and general media frenzy (desperate to ride whatever the current wave lest be left in the dust and sell fewer copies) makes for some pretty shaky arguments.

Interesting how you condemn the superficiality of approaching an attractive, average-at-best player for possible branding or promotion as lacking integrity and in the same breath you formulate some awful negative opinions (skanks, sluts, blah blah) about someone else you've never met, never spoken with, and know absolutely nothing about because she has a tatto on her rump and likes hockey players . Sounds like a rush to judgment based on very superficial traits and secondhand gossip information.

I'm not so fanatical about defending people I don't even know or care to know,  but a hypocritical dash to evaluate those who have become fortunate, whether through hardwork, pure luck, fortunate genes, or any combination of these paints you only as resentful.

"She never won a major yet she made more money than any of the other players, and perhaps that's what I hated most about her.  If her compensation would have been consistent with her ability, then I wouldn't have minded her antics so much."

Well while you're at it why not lament about this issue on a global level? Why do teachers, policemen, and other hardworking citizens get paid pennies for working 5 times as hard as compared to the famous or athletic or just plain hot? Why does Howard Stern make $1000.00 every 24 seconds?

Yep, life ain't fair.

Even babies have been proven to be drawn more to attractive people. It's just reality. Superficial little bast**ds!

"And they didn't have to act like skanks to do it.  Does that make sense to you?"

Yep. We got it!

I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with it.

There are many target markets in US that haven't been explored, those might not be an A-market but you might make profit out of it and none of your competitor really gonna do this, I think you should definitely do it.

For example, girls I knew had no interest in TT but they once saw B.Reed (on the internet), they paid attention and asked me who he was. I guarantee that if she decide to play she'd buy at least one of Kspin shirt(the same Barney wore) and/or some more products and of course they will visit your website more often.

Was that before or after NATT thanksgiving weekend of 2005 ? Is Barney Jr. still Killerspin sponsored - if so - hopefully 're-branded' in a new improved version (IMO)  ?

I know some see Mr. Blackwell as the Donald Trump of table tennis but lately maybe the similarities are a little scary - maybe even for Robert who may have been a trailblazer on this path - minus the bad hair of course (second chances and all?)  Robert - is there any way you could get Rosie O'Donnald mad at YOU too ? -    (tis mostly humour - please don't go 'L arry' on me I beg !)

Idealistically, and maybe even pragmatically, I  do have to agree with Marco's general concern, to some extent. As a player and club promoter I'd much prefer you attract more Bibas or Dubinas, or admirers of them, into the sport, rather than seeking out 'Bad boys'.  Apart from moral considerations, I think it's an underappreaciated and underserved market segment in sports and even entertainment these days- as witnessed  by the recent  NY Basketbrawl (Also you'll likely cut down seriously on your returned check losses as a side benefit)

I bravely - or foolishly - you decide - wandered a little farther down a similar trail here:

BTW, just to be clear, I don't know this Ukrainian girl, don't know anything about her, and definitely NOT saying that she is a "bad girl."  She might be as safe as mother's milk for all I know.

The issue is that usually a company will only sponsor a 1300 player if she is 4 years old...

I say we should promote ability first.  Then, if you have to choose between 2 players of equal rating and there is none higher, the cuter one.  :)

But don't put looks above ability.  We are promoting TT after all, not something else.

I think Killerspin has a couple of models that didn't play table tennis at all on the initial website.  I think having the models also be players is a step in the right direction regardless of their level.  I know many of the STIGA models don't play at all.  I prefer to see the actual players sporting the cool fashions instead of someone from an agency.

There are a couple of stereotypes we are battling in our sport.  One is that if you aren't asian you can't play.  I think we are doing a better job these days on that.  Also that it is not really a sport.  I think we are also doing well there.  As for having good looking women we are really short on having enough women playing so I would strongly support Robert's efforts to get more girls and women to play.  NCTTA is focusing on this also.

We need to attract people from outside the sport into the sport.  If we can get women in their teens, 20's and 30's to start playing Table Tennis then the sport will grow in popularity.

While this is true, it would seem that any marketing campaign involving this girl will end up drawing a hundred times more men than it does women.  I think there are several junior girls who would work much better in this regard.

Golf has Tiger, Annika, Michelle and Phil.  Granted Phil could drop a few, it is a much cooler sport than TT in the eyes of kids, their parents and the media not to mention sponsors. If Tiger were to play a TT match or JO were to play a round of golf I think we both know which one would get more air-time.

Actually golf had Jan Stephanson as a pin-up (aka Anna Kornicova) in the 70's.

Good point about Jan - she and Nancy Lopez did a lot to bring womens golf to the mainstream.

I'd like to note that Jan had much more success in  golf than Anna did in tennis.  I know she won three majors, and a fair number of other tournaments.  She did this while competing with the very dominant Nancy Lopez who was in her prime.  Jan was not "just a pretty face".

I think maybe what you want is for Robert to "hire" her, not sponsor her.  I think, like you, the word sponsor is misapplied here.  However, I doubt that she will be bumping some aspiring kid out of a sponsorship.  Nothing wrong with having lots of hot chicks around from a marketing perspective.

The word is her level is about 1300 US (near the level a a top 8 year-old Austrailian boy).

Yes, I wish the pictures were a little sharper and less noisy.  I've received a few tips in adjusting that.  Ky Nguyen suggested using a fixed 1/200 sec shutter speed and 800 iso selection for indoor sports photos and 400 iso for still action.

well, a high shutter speed is not needed for shots of subjects that are not moving much.

lets assume you used a slower shutter speed, then you would be able to use a lower ISO setting ( less noise ) and still get a good exposure.

If you used a faster shutter speed, you would need to either

1: open the appature more to get a good exposure
2: increase ISO
3: flash / more lights.

When shooting table tennis, use a fast shutter speed to freeze motion.

if its bad lighting where the game is, increase the appature, and or the ISO( you will get more noise with higher iso......but at least you wont get motion blur )

opening the shutter will make things infront and behind your subject appear more blured - this is called bokeh and can really make an image look nice.

here is an example
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/images18/bokehinpics.jpg

see how the background is out of focus - yet the subject is focued perfectly. this makes your eye more attracted to the main subject.

sorry for off topic, i was just trying to be helpful
