Carl Akerlind experienced the two extremes of sporting emotions in Valencia

ITTF WJC Venezuela
Junior Open
Sweden’s Carl Akerlind experienced the `Ups and Downs’ of sport or more
precisely the `Downs and Ups’ of sport at the Venezuelan Junior Open in
Valencia on Friday 2nd March 2007.
The end result was success. Sweden defeated the host nation in their
quarter-final encounter in the Cadet Boys’ Team event, the result showing a
three-two victory for the Europeans with Gustavo Ascaso unbeaten for Venezuala.
However, the score line masks the drama.
The Down
In the opening encounter Carl Akerlind led Gustavo Ascaso by two games to one
and in the fourth game he was ahead 10-7. He held three match points. He lost
the next five points and then lost the crucial fifth game 11-8.
Gustavo Ascaso won 4-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8. A good start for Venezuela but
the next two matches both went the way of Sweden. Douglas Lindqvist beat Kleiver
Sanchez and the visitors won the doubles before Gustavo Ascaso returned to the
table to level matters. He beat Douglas Lindqvist in four games.
The Up
The fixture hinged on the contest between Kleiver Sanchez and Carl Akerlind and
it appeared that the verdict was going in favour of the Venezuelan. He led 10-7
in the decisive fifth game only for Carl Akerlind to totally reverse the
experience of his contest against Gustavo Ascaso.
He won the next five points, to clinch the match and a semi-final place. The
young Swede won 12-10, 8-11, 8-11, 13-1, 12-10!
Nerves
“I became nervous in the first match”, admitted Carl Akerlind. “After he
won the fourth game he was more confident and I made mistakes.” Defeat but
credit to the Swede he came back strongly.
“In my second match I didn’t play as well as in the first”, explained Carl
Akerlind. “Kleiver was winning a lot of points with his forehand topspin and
when I was down 10-7 I just said to myself keep going, I think he got
nervous.”
Ironic, Carl Akerlind played well and lost but played badly and won! Such is
sport, such is life!
